The Valley of Icesus

A world held
between fire and ice.

The Valley of Icesus

Beyond the mountains, Aegic lies beneath the ice. Within them, one valley endures.

Three great volcanoes give it warmth. A magical forcefield holds that heat beneath a sheltering sky, keeping the encroaching glaciers at bay.

Frozen lakes and rivers wind between forests, kingdoms, and old roads. Winters are merciless; summers are brief and full of life. This is your home — and the beginning of your adventure.

Idles: The gem case design was never actually on the carpenters' rack, so nobody could build one. It is there now and it costs a hundred thousand gold. There are three versions on the one paper. The plain case is ordinary joinery and can be built anywhere the craft is practised. The banded case takes a bar of smelted metal let into the slot edges, and the richer the ore and the cleaner the smelt the more the case will hold, so a gold bar out of a deep mine beats a copper one out of a shallow one. The runed case beds a moonglow into the lid as well, wants the deepest metal there is, and is the only case that comes off the bench weightless. Both metal versions need fine-grained wood and a province workshop, and if the runes fail you keep the case and the banding and lose only the stone.

Idles: Loose shards, gems and arrowheads now take up room in the bag you keep them in. It is the count that costs you, not the weight, so a bigger sack will not help. A case will: full or empty, it takes up the same room. Andolal's in Vaerlon sells shard pouches and gem cases cheaply, and will sell you one even when you are already too full to carry anything else. Sitting on hundreds? Get a crafted one made, they hold several times what a bought one does.

Bumbles: cenedoissian lycanythropes are no longer interested in the weak or recently reincarnated

Idles: Looking for a couple of testers for new area creation tool I'm working on. Join to #creator on Discord to learn more.

Belannaer: Hive ability "feeder tendrils" can now be used on all corpses in a room instead of targeting a specific corpse.

Belannaer: Hive culture guild no longer benefits from PDF boon blessings to prevent double dipping with another culture guild. If you are already in a reinc where you have used those points they will stay until you reinc away or reset your culture guild points in someway.

Belannaer: Shifter secondary guild's "larger/smaller form" shift is no longer blocked by wearing medium/heavy armour.

Idles: Runed shard pouches and arrowhead cases were asking for a hide that almost nothing in the game could provide. The bar now depends on the bench: a province leatherworks that has been built up will take hides the guild station refuses, so upgrading one is worth doing. Dragonscale runs the other way, that work stays at the Leathercrafters guild because no province workshop can be built for it, and the refusal message now tells you which of the two you are looking at. Also, a few pouches crafted in a window before the last reboot were made without consuming their shard, and have been set back to ordinary crafted pouches. Thanks to the reporter.

Effective after the next reboot, loose shards, gems and arrowheads take up more room inside a container, and there are new containers that hold them properly. Here is the problem. Every stone and every shard is its own object in the game's memory and its own file on disk. Nothing merges them, so...

Frequently asked questions

A little guidance for your first steps into the world.

Read the beginner’s guide
Is Icesus really free?

Yes. There is no store, no credits and no pay-to-win — the game never asks you for money. Icesus is run by Jää ry, a registered Finnish nonprofit; players who want to support it can join the society, whose members fund the servers and gather at the annual MudCon meetup.

Can I play Icesus in my browser?

Yes — click Play and you are in the world in seconds, with nothing to install, on any device. When you want a full desktop setup later, there is an official Mudlet package with a ready-made HUD and mapper.

What makes Icesus different from other MUDs?

Three things players name most: provinces — settlements that player councils claim, govern by vote and build up with mines, farms and smithies; an extensive reincarnation system that lets you rebuild your character as you learn the game; and a frozen, living outworld where terrain blocks your line of sight and rivers freeze and thaw with the seasons. And it is still in active development — provinces shipped in 2026.

Can I change my race or guilds later?

Yes — that is what reincarnation is for. Rebuild your race, guilds and stats without abandoning your character, and plan the result in advance with the reinc simulator. A wrong first build is not a mistake here; it is a phase.

How many people play Icesus?

Dozens of players are online regularly, the Discord is active daily, and the community meets in person at the annual MudCon. Small enough that people know your name, big enough that parties form every day.

Can I build my own areas and quests?

Yes. Use Icesus Creator to design areas, characters and adventures for a living world. Reach player level 25, bring good writing skills and a creative mind, then join Discord’s #creator channel. See the tool and how to become a creator.
